For the Nair community, this strength has long been nurtured through an age-old and highly respected system known as the Karayogam. At the Telangana Nair Seva Society (TNSS), the Karayogam is not only a traditional model—it is the lifeline of our organizational structure, a grassroots platform for unity, service, and mutual upliftment.

In this modern era, while many of us have moved away from our ancestral homes and native villages, the values that held our communities together are more relevant than ever. That is why TNSS proudly carries forward the Karayogam system, adapted to today’s needs while staying true to its cultural roots.

What is a Karayogam?

Origin and Meaning

The word Karayogam comes from two Malayalam words:

“Kara” meaning a local area or settlement
“Yogam” meaning a gathering or assembly

So, a Karayogam essentially refers to a community assembly of people residing in a particular locality, brought together by shared identity, tradition, and values. Traditionally, it was the primary institution for organizing social, religious, and cultural activities among Nairs in villages across Kerala.

The concept of Karayogam has evolved over time—from being a small village council in ancient Kerala to becoming a vibrant, democratic, and community-based platform in today’s urban and semi-urban settings.

At TNSS, Karayogams form the grassroots structure through which we function across Telangana. Every locality or district where Nair families reside can form a Karayogam, and together, these Karayogams form the wider network that feeds into the state-level society.

Purpose of a Karayogam

A Karayogam is not just an administrative body. It is:

A social family, offering support and companionship to all members
A cultural hub, preserving and promoting our traditions
A welfare unit, identifying and helping those in need
A development center, organizing educational and empowerment programs
A spiritual guide, fostering religious and ethical awareness

How Karayogams Work

TNSS Karayogams follow a structured, transparent, and democratic framework that enables effective operation and inclusive participation.

Formation of a Karayogam

Any locality with a significant number of Nair families can come together to form a Karayogam under the guidance of the TNSS state committee. The process includes:

Conducting a meeting with interested families
Electing an interim working committee
Registering the Karayogam with TNSS
Framing basic by-laws aligned with the Society’s vision
Electing office bearers for an official term

Each Karayogam is expected to function in line with TNSS policies while enjoying the autonomy to take local initiatives.

Membership

Membership is open to all Nair families residing in the defined locality of the Karayogam. Members are enrolled through:

Application and basic documentation
Nominal membership fee (used for local activities)
Family-wise records for better communication

All family members can participate in events, and adult members have voting rights in Karayogam elections.

Organizational Structure

Each Karayogam typically consists of:

President: Overall leadership and representation
Secretary: Operational head responsible for coordination
Treasurer: Maintains financial records and transparency
Executive Committee: A group of 5–15 members responsible for planning and executing activities
Sub-Committees: For women, youth, senior citizens, culture, education, etc.

The structure ensures equal participation and responsibility sharing among members.

Meetings and Decision-Making

Regular meetings are conducted:

Monthly Meetings: To review activities, approve plans, and gather community feedback
Annual General Meeting (AGM): To review the year’s progress, accounts, and elect new leadership
Special Meetings: For emergencies or festival/event planning

All decisions are made democratically, with transparency and community consensus.

Each Karayogam organizes and manages activities such as:
